Keeping the Kids Busy without Breaking the Bank - Part 1

School's out, the temperature is rising and boredom is beginning to set in. Rather than drive each other crazy indoors or hear the dreaded "Mom, I have nothing to do," keep the kids active this summer with these frugal, fun and family-friendly activities...

This will begin a four part series, where each day I will help you discover ways to beat the summer boredom:

Staying Cool - Being an Arizonan, I know first-hand that the heat can bring down the best of attitudes. I, for one, being to lose my cool (no pun intended) when it's nearing 115-degrees and we feel trapped indoors. But, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors in a safe way this summer. So slap on the sunscreen, wear a big hat, and drink lots of water because you and your kids are about to cool down...
  • Swimming at the YMCA or local Community Center - Check with your local YMCA for swimming lessons and open-swim times. They are very reasonably-priced and usually have a wide variety of Aquatics classes. Likewise, contact your local community center to find out their Aquatics schedule for the summer. (Just do a quick Google search: "Your County name" + parks and recreation.)
  • Hit the Splash Pads - Have you seen these? Kids love them! Usually you will find these splash pads at nearby parks or outdoor shopping centers. If you live is Arizona, check out this great list for Splash pads in different parts of the Valley.
  • Water Fun in your Own Backyard - Setting up an expensive sprinkler or inflatable pool can provide some cool-down time that's a little closer to home. Kids will also enjoy filling up spray bottles, water balloons, water races, or squirting each other with the hose. Don't forget the sunscreen and don't forget to join in on the fun!!
Stayed tuned tomorrow as I discover more fun, cheap ways to keep the kids busy this summer!!
