Throw a House Party and Get FREE Products

What's House Party, you ask?

Membership is FREE.

How it works: You register and apply to certain "parties" that you think you might like hosting. If selected, you invite your friends and family over to your house to share your House party package and sample & review the products.

For example, I was selected to host a Barilla pasta party. House Party mailed me a package that included 2 boxes of Barilla pasta, 2 coupons for free jars of Barilla pasta sauce, 8 sets of coupons for Barilla pasta and sauce to give to family and friends, wine glass charms, an Italian book, a CD, 8 Barilla kitchen timers, coloring books and bean sacks for the kids. It was a wonderful surprise and all I had to do is cook up the Barilla pasta and sauce (yummy), share with family and friends, and spread the word.

Right now, House Party is accepting applications for some of their new upcoming parties:
The application takes under 5 minutes to complete and is well worth it if you get selected. Visit Houseparty.com for more details or to apply for the next party!

TIPS for Getting FREEBIES:

* To be completely honest, I would hate filling out forms for FREEBIES and, as much as I love getting FREE stuff in the mail, I just wouldn't do it. My secret weapon is Roboform - a FREE download that allows you to click one button and fill out the entire form. It's a lifesaver! It also comes in really handy when you want to enter online sweepstakes. :)

* Another trick I use is using a separate Gmail account for all my online submissions. Set up a new Gmail account for FREE and use that address when submitting for FREEBIES... this way you can avoid spam and you can keep your regular Inbox clean.

So, what'd you get in the mail this week?

{Ask Me Anything} Grocery Budget

I figured it was a good week to cover this frequently-asked-question since I just made a large shopping trip.

The most common question related to my grocery spending is:

"Do you have a grocery budget?"

I have received a lot of mixed responses from readers regarding my grocery spending. Some flat-out criticize me for spending more than $XX amount a week, some have told me that my grocery "deals" aren't thrifty enough for their liking, but overall I get a lot of support from moms, who like me, focus on a healthy kind of frugal. (Sorry, I'm not interested in living off of Pop-Tarts. I'm not saying I never eat "junk" but it's more of a dessert.)

I think the important thing to remember is to do what works best for your family. There once was a time when I had no self-control in a grocery store and would spend $150 easily. I had no menu plan, I didn't use coupons, I went in without a list (gasp!). I began with a weekly grocery budget to get it under control and, once my mentality changed so did our grocery bills. Now I am very reserved and budget-minded when I am in the store. I still aim for quality but it needs to be thrifty, too.

I don't have a set amount that I spend every week. I do, however, tend to spend anywhere from $35 - $70 a week depending on what's on sale and what we have going on for the week. Some weeks I don't shop at all. Some weeks I make a couple of small trips. It varies with our family, but I don't set any strict guidelines for myself. I know that I'm not careless with my spending so I don't really "control" it. Does that make sense?

I don't like to limit myself to a set amount for several reasons:
  1. We don't eat out. Maybe once every 2-3 months.
  2. We have get togethers where I need to make things for crowds.
  3. We like to eat a lot of produce (good amount of organic), which is usually a hit or miss in the store.
  4. I know I can still feed my family healthy meals for less than $70 a week, which I feel is a responsible amount for a family who doesn't eat out.
When I plan my grocery trips, I always begin with what produce is on sale, especially the organic stuff. (I plan my meals around this.) If the Arizona heat has blessed us with something growing in our garden, we'll count that in. If we grab some goods at the Farmer's market, we'll plan around that. But I never walk in to a store with an envelope of $40 in spend. I know a lot of families who do this and I think it's a great idea if you are training your brain and starting to budget. Again, it just doesn't work for me.

I do my best to buy organic because that's what's important to us, but I am getting a bit more flexible if there is a noticeable discrepancy in the cost. If, for example, organic grapes are only .10 more a lb. then I will go ahead with organic. If, though, it is twice as much then I will likely go with the non-organic version or I will skip it altogether. (Follow this guide for which foods are most important to buy organic.) I do, however, buy organic milk and mostly cage-free, grain fed eggs which tend to be a lot higher. There are a few other items that are staples for us that are usually higher because of the quality and we're OK with that.

Again, the important thing to remember is to do what works best for your family. If that means creating a budget of $XX amount to spend every week, then stick to it. I do believe that you can eat healthy and still be frugal -- even if you do splurge on the occasional sweet treat or slightly overspend one week.

So, I guess the not-so-simple is "No." I don't have an actual budget -- if I spend $30, I'm fine. If I spend $60, I'm good. If I know we are eating healthy foods and I'm doing my best to be thrifty about my purchases, then I just shop.

************************************************

Do you have a question about couponing, shopping, saving, meal planning, homeschooling, or even about me? No matter how big, small, or trivial it seems, someone else probably has the same question, so ask away! As long as it's respectful, I'm an open book so "Ask Me {almost} Anything!"

Just drop me a line and I'll do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.

I am going to earn big brownie points with Hubs! ;)

Recipe of the Week: Kale and Roasted Vegetable Soup

{img credit: Simply Recipes}

You're probably thinking: "Why on God's green earth would you be making soup when it's 103-degrees outside?"

I can't help it. I love soup. It's super easy, packs tons of nutrients (if you make it right), and takes minimal clean up in the kitchen. Love it.

Since it's technically Fall in many parts of the country (and since I'm really envious of all of you who have four seasons), I'm making me some soup.

One of all-time favorite soups comes from one of my all-time favorite sites, Simply Recipes. Elise works wonders in the kitchen and, if I'm ever a multi-millionaire, I'm hiring her to come be my chef! (You've got to bookmark her site. Really.)

Kale and Roasted Vegetable Soup brings together some hearty and healthy veggies & a little protein punch with some added Northern beans. Since I usually have a ton of roasted veggies on hand I always have a new variety to add to it. The best part about this soup is it tastes even better the next day...and the next.

Kale is one of my favorite veggies to feed my family -- I usually just wash it, dry it, drizzle with olive oil, minced garlic, salt and pepper and roast up! We love when it gets a little crunch. :) Besides eating platefuls of crunchy kale, we enjoy it in soup like in this week's soup.

Since Butternut Squash wasn't on sale this week, I'll add in some roasted zucchini instead. We also like to sprinkle some Parmesan on top and serve with some warm cornbread. We have lots of spinach this week so I'll make a little spinach salad to go along with it, too! Mmmm, can't wait.

My Last-Minute CVS Run

I went in for this:
  • Toilet paper (we were down to 1/2 a roll)
  • Tylenol (for poor Hubs neck)
I figured since I had packed the toddler into the car and made my way to the store, I may as well make it worth while....

I left with this:

LOTS of clearance items, people!! The dollar spot was all 75% off -- and some other random goodies and school supplies marked down!

Some of the goods I scored:

* 5 boxes of raisins (clearanced to .25 each)
* 2 boxes of prunes (clearance to .25 each)
* 3 melamine plates (.19 each)
* 4 small boxes of Wheat Thins (FREE after $1 off coupon)
* 6 - freezer storage bags (.25 each)
* Microfiber rags (.25 each)
* 3pk. dry erase markers (.19 a pack)
* Duster (.49)
* 3 pk. highlighters (.25 a pack)
* locker shelf (1.49 - to use for extra storage in cabinet)
* Double toothpicks and holders (.25)
* Preschool workbooks (.39 each)
* Preschool flashcards (.39 each)
* 2 Mom's oatmeals (used 2-.75 off Qs)
* Lumene Firming Cream (.99 after $2 off Q)

And, of course, the toilet paper and Tylenol. :)

TOTAL: $23.53 after coupons (used $7.16 leftover on CVS gift card that I earned on My Points) = $16.37 OOP

It's been a looong time since I've spent that much at CVS, but it was worth it! Considering what I originally went in for would have cost me at least $10 any way. :)

My Grocery Loot This Week

I skipped grocery shopping last week since I had enough left over from the week before and plenty in the freezer/stockpile.

This week was focused on replenishing our produce and getting some odds & ends since we have a couple of get togethers that I need to make things for this week, which is why I spent a bit more this week.

This will probably last us another week and a half though... I'll just grab some organic milk, Alpine Valley bread and Organic Peanut Butter (and maybe a pumpkin pie, mmmm!) from Costco and we should be good!
